Move over CRT television, it is a large screen TV world and few large screen televisions are more popular than the liquid crystal display or LCD versions you can find in most electronics dealers around the country. Without getting into too much of the techno-jargon about LCD television suffice it to say that LCD TV is a flat screen version of something that you or your parents probably first saw in an episode of Lost In Space or Star Trek. However, while those flat screen monitors were flashing props, today’s LCD’s are the real thing and these screens are now being used in everything from video players, clocks, watches, calculators, telephones, and yes, televisions. These flat panel display monitors use light modulating properties of liquid crystals, thus the name. They do not emit light directly but what they do is comprise the main component of the most popular television monitors on the market today. Here are a few different types of LCD’s, along with who makes them and how much you can expect to pay for them.

Why LCD TV?
LCD TVs have become as popular as the popcorn you’ll eat while watching your favorite movie on one of them – and for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that the picture is simply amazing. It also doesn’t hurt that they are lightweight, take up almost no room behind the display screen as compared to old CRT televisions, which needed more room in the rear than Kristie Alley after a long night at the Santa Monica All-You-Can-Eat Chinese Buffet. LCD TV’s are also more energy efficient and offer much safer disposal than there distant CRT cousin – though if you own a LCD TV the last thing you’re thinking about is tossing it. In addition, with LCD TV’sm you’ll find no geothermic distortion, little or no flicker depending on back light technology, they are not effected by screen burn-in, they can be made into almost any size or shape relatively easily, and there is no theoretical resolution limit.
There are drawbacks to LCD TVs but they really are like complaining that it was a little too warm and sunny this week. The viewing angle can be limited causing the color and other aspects of the picture to become a little distorted. They cannot be used with light guns or pens, you’ll find some loss of contract in high temperature environments, and there is poor picture display when positioned in direct sunlight.
Overall, LCD TV’s offer the best product for the money on the market today and the price continues to fall to within almost everyone’s means. One walk through any electronics store, where literally hundreds of them are on, and on display, and you’ll see why if you don’t have one now you have to get one.
My take: After owning a Samsung 42′ LCD TV I can’t imagine how the heck I ever watched the Rangers and the NY Giants on anything else. The display is so vivid you have a much greater sense of being involved in the game. I know it must sound a little over the top but when i watched the Rangers on my LCD TV my beer was just a little colder and my wings just a little bolder. If you don’t own one, go out and get one yesterday.
